Three-piece interactive series
Divided explores identity and self-perception through three colored-pencil portraits created to be viewed with red-and-blue 3D glasses. Each portrait contains overlapping red and blue imagery, allowing different versions of the subject to emerge depending on how the work is viewed.
Looking through the red lens, the blue lens, both lenses, or viewing the drawing without glasses changes what is visible—and, in turn, changes the viewer's perception of the person. The series uses this shift to examine how quickly we form judgments about others based on limited information.
Just as the portraits change depending on the lens through which they are viewed, our perceptions of people are shaped by our own experiences, assumptions, and perspectives. What we see at first glance is only one version of a much larger picture.
